Module 9: Tense Usage in Different Types of Writing

Now that you have learned what tenses are and their role in creating sentences based on action and time, let’s learn how they can be used in different types of writing.

How you use tense will always remain the same. The formulas, rules, and sentence structures we’ve discussed in the previous modules always stay the same. However, tenses can also be used to create a specific voice in your writing and speech.

Grammatical voice is the relationship between the action of a verb and the subject. Its use helps the reader or listener better understand your message. This is especially important when differentiating between an academic or professional voice and a creative voice.

Module Nine explains the difference between academic, business and professional, and creative writing. Review the following scenarios to understand when to use specific tenses to help create a clear message for different types of audiences.
