Extraneous Words Exercise (681)

In each sentence, delete a superfluous word or phrase or replace a verbose phrase with fewer words.

Answers and Explanations

1.
Original: In addition to writing, editing, and proofreading site content, the successful candidate will also be responsible for copywriting application emails.
Correct : In addition to writing, editing, and proofreading site content, the successful candidate will be responsible for copywriting application emails.

"Also" is redundant to "in addition to."

2.
Original: She pursues the study of Eastern philosophies and religions.
Correct : She studies Eastern philosophies and religions.

The phrase "pursues the study of" is easily contracted by employing "study" as a verb rather than as a noun.

3.
Original: Currently, we are experiencing technical difficulties.
Correct : We are experiencing technical difficulties.

"Currently" is redundant to the present-tense verb that follows.

4.
Original: We are taking the opportunity to contact you now to give you plenty of time to respond.
Correct : We are contacting you now to give you plenty of time to respond.

The phrase "taking the opportunity to contact" has one verb too many, followed by an unnecessary phrase.

5.
Original: They have extended an invitation to him to speak at the group’s next meeting.
Correct : They have invited him to speak at the group’s next meeting.

As with the second example in this set of sentences, this statement is rendered more concise by replacing a phrase (here, "extended an invitation") with the verb form of the noun in the phrase (here, "invited").
