Redundancy Exercise (230)

A writing style that uses unnecessary words is said to be redundant. Edit the following sentences to rid them of verbiage (excessive use of words).

Answers and Explanations

1.
Original: Indiana Jones decided to return again for a second time to the ancient old ruin.
Correct : Indiana Jones decided to return to the ancient ruin.

The meaning of return is "to go back." The act of "returning" implies that it is "for the second time." Had it been for a third time, it would be worth mentioning. Ancient and old are synonyms; since we are talking about an archeologist and a ruin, ancient is probably the better choice.

2.
Original: My friends wanted to climb up to the summit at the top of the mountain.
Correct : My friends wanted to climb to the summit of the mountain.

The verb climb does not need the particle up. The word summit means "the top."

3.
Original: The night before his murder, Mr. Krupnik deviated from his regular, usual routine.
Correct : The night before his murder, Mr. Krupnik deviated from his routine.

The word routine means "an established, regular, or usual procedure."

4.
Original: This disagreement and difference of opinion is pointless; can’t we co-operate together?
Correct : This disagreement is pointless; can’t we co-operate?

The word disagreement means "difference of opinion." The word co-operate means "to work together."

5.
Original: The reality show producer wanted to locate and find the houses of the wealthy affluent residents of the exclusive restricted neighborhood.
Correct : The reality show producer wanted to locate the houses of the wealthy residents of the exclusive neighborhood.

Locate and find are synonyms, so one or the other may be left out without losing meaning; affluent and wealthy are synonyms, so either may be left out; in the context of a neighborhood, exclusive and restricted are synonyms.
