I love to write and am constantly trying to approach being a good writer. My question is what are the best ways to emphasize a word?

As an example here is a draft paragraph I am struggling with. As you can see, there are

Like the word 'moron'. Everyone knows what it means, but how do you define it? Well, you could use words like "idiot", but then you would have to define that word. <<in my original draft the word 'that' is in italics.

As you can see, there are several ways that emphasis can be shown, but what is the proper and consistent method?

Anyways, the real job of a journalist is to interpret the exact information or quote or story in a way that is understandable to the the reader.
