Great article and great responses.

I like to have my Macintosh computer read my text. I often end up doing the repeated word thing and it catches those as well as words like impotence.

I have found several things to work for me, when I am going through the proofreading stages of my manuscripts.

Being that I write free-hand I find it very important to review my material AFTER I have typed a chapter or particular section. I read it aloud to myself--S-L-O-W-L-Y--so I can hear my own mistakes. (Having a physical printed copy helps alot.)

When you are completely involved in a project it is easy to begin reading from memory. (One trick is to try reading from top to bottom, to force your brain to actually do some work!!!) That's why I incorporate the help of my "Pillars"--my proofreading team of volunteers who help me polish my work.

Each one brings a different perspective to the table and together--one chapter at a time, one page at a time--we work to build a workable manuscript for an editor.

I found it helps ease the pains of having to re-write and re-write again....
