View Full Version : Wanting to write but not to be read?
I was just wondering, that sometimes I like to write things, and then I ask family and friends to read it and give me an opinion. But there are also times I write something, and even if I like the piece, I just don't want anyone to read it. Or as someone mentioned elsewhere, I just write to get my thoughts straight but without thinking of an audience.
How much of what you write do you keep for yourself? And I don't mean about early manuscripts and so on that are discarded, but complete pieces that you lock away, may or may not re-read later, but that you don't let others see? (Like a diary, maybe)

I write things that I don't intend to show anyone else either. However since I am in college most of my writing is presented, and written, to be read by a specific audience. I would say a little less than half of what I write are things I keep private.
I think this is pretty normal!
I write a journal for personal use only, because I think things through by writing them down. I've never shown it to anyone.
I also write a couple of my own online blogs (one personal, one professional), write for a handful of other blogs (Daily Writing Tips amongst them!) and write short stories (a couple of which have won prizes in national competitions).
Don't ever feel you HAVE to show your writing to other people. It's fine to keep some things just for yourself, whether it's an experiemental piece, a private diary, a crappy first draft, or whatever.

I write for myself, it's intrinsic. Sometimes, I like others to read my work and tell me what they think. You can't judge yourself, it's impossible. And yes, some of my writing is totally private.

The only things I write for myself are personal goals, principles and thoughts I need to meditate over on a daily basis.
But I think it is pretty normal also to have some stuff you don't want other people to read. Words are extensions of your thoughts.

I actually get embarrassed when family or friends ask me to read what I've written.
Seriously.
When my other half is sitting next to me at his corner of our desk (It's a huge desk lol) I can't write. I'll do anything else, but write while he's there.
I have no problem letting others (strangers) read my stuff, but family... no.
Erk. :)
I think it's the fear that they'll laugh, and the guys wouldn't want to read it anyway. :)
(I write paranormal romance...)

hi Alex!!
I believe there are quite a few people who like to jot down something, most of the times just for themselves. This is perfectly common, especially with those who have an inclination to reading and writing... and as one of the members mentioned words are an extension of our thoughts....

It's very rare that I will read what I've written previously. Every day is different so I try not to mix my old thoughts with my new ones. However, I try to keep the majority of my writings to myself. I figure some people might not understand my deep thoughts, so I keep it from them. People are so quick to call you crazy when you're thinking on a level beyond their reach.
