Chosen
Chapter 1
It was midday and the sun was just beginning to touch the top of the mountains as two boys raced through the trees of Fangorn Forest. Both were covered in gunmetal gray armor that was embedded with six blue and orange stones in their gauntlets, boots, and breastplates. The first boy, Nathaniel, who had light brown hair and pale gray eyes, was the oldest of the two at eighteen and the most obvious choice as leader of the small retrieval squad. The other boy, Chris, was younger than his companion at seventeen and had jet black hair and green eyes. “So, when is this party going to get started?” Chris asked as they stopped to rest on a low hanging branch of a elm tree. Nathaniel leaned back against the trunk and shut his eyes. “You’ll know when the time is right” he said.
Across the forest, in a large grassy meadow, Ashley kneeled in the tall grass with her head tucked into her chest and eyes closed. She was covered in gray armor that was embedded with red stones marking her as a fire adept. Laying loosely in both of her hands with blades crossed were a pair of broadswords. She lifted her head slightly as the wind began to pick up around her. Her ice blue eyes scanned the area cautiously as the snapping of tree branches to her right brought her senses to high alert. She gripped the hilts of her swords tighter and in one fluid movement, turned and raised both swords just as another sword wrapped in flames came crashing down above her. Her companion Jason, who was also a fire adept, gripped his sword with both hands and pushed hard, sending Ashley backwards a couple of feet. Jason landed and brushed his sweaty blond hair out of his eyes as he tossed his sword from his right hand to his left. “Are we really going to do this now?” Ashley said incredulously as she pointed both blades towards the ground. “What if they find us?”
“So what if they do?” Jason replied as a red magic circle appeared under his feet. Ashley almost let out a sigh and she readied her swords. I guess it can’t be helped “Ok Ember, let’s make this quick!” Words burned into the stone on her right hand. “ ALL RIGHT , MY MASTER” “ Level one!” “ ASCENSION!” Both of her blades burst into blue flames as the red gem on both of her swords glowed and her eyes turned a deep crimson . Jason simply smirked and commanded his stones. “ Pyron!” “ YES SIR, LOAD CARTRIDGE” The slide on the hilt of his sword fell back to fling an empty shell into the air. “ PHEONIX FLAME” Several fireballs formed around him and he pointed towards Ashley. “Fire!” As the flaming missiles sped toward their target, Ashley leapt over them and charged at Jason while bringing both blades over her head in an overhead slash. Jason, anticipating her movements, leapt over her attack and, flipping upside down, exhaled a stream of fire at her unprotected back. Ashley felt the incoming heat and Ember flashed. “PROTECTION” Instantly a shield of red energy surrounded her and deflected the flames harmlessly into the air. Back in the haven of the trees, Nathaniel looked up to see the fire launch into the air. Chris appeared by his side in a second bouncing up and down, unable to control his excitement. “ Finally, now we get to see some action after waiting a million trillion years” He paused thoughtfully as Nathaniel stood up and stretched. “ Just think, out of every adept that could have been chosen for this mission-” Yeah, unfortunately I get stuck with you Nathaniel thought as he pushed off the tree limb and took off through the surrounding foliage. “ Torrent target position?”
The blue stone on his left hand blinked as a mechanical male voice answered. “ TWO TARGETS LOCATED ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY MILES FROM YOUR CURRENT POSITION” Nathaniel’s hands curled into fists as he mentally prepared himself for the conflict to come.
Back in the meadow the fight escalated as Jason decided to turn the fight up a notch. As he landed from a back flip, two cartridges exploded from his sword and a magic circle appeared beneath him. “METEOR STORM” Instantly the air around them went supernova as the sky rained fiery destruction upon its target. Ashley simply stood where she was as the molten rocks bared down upon her. All right, its time to end this With a thought she willed her swords backs into the stones on her hands and commanded her stones. “ DRAGON BLADE” Instantly twin blades of blue flame materialized from her forearms as she channeled more of her power into her feet. “BURNING SPEED” She charged forward her speed now leaving afterimages in her wake as she cut through the chunks of burning rock that rained around her. Great, now we see the true power of the Dragon style.
Unbeknownst to both combatants, two shadows simultaneously dropped onto a tree limb behind them. Nathaniel could hardly believe his luck. Perfect. With them distracted this will be a piece of cake. “Okay kid, you know the drill we’re-” He stopped short as he realized Chris was no longer beside him. What the? His sinking feeling of dread turned to outright horror as he saw Chris walking straight into the middle of the battlefield, weapon in hand. Ashley and Jason abruptly stopped their fight as they turned to face the newcomer. Chris deftly pointed his sword at them as he said the words he had apparently practiced for weeks on end. “ All right you two, you know why we’re here and you know what’s going to happen”
“ Oh really, and where’s your backup?” Jason sarcastically replied, inspecting a scratch on his hand. “ Nathaniel just happens to be up in that tree over there” Chris said, pointing out hi location. Nathaniel, hands instinctively crushed the six inch tree limb he was holding as he repeatedly bashed his head against an imaginary wall Why,Why,Why
Down below, Chris had finished delivering the terms and was awaiting their response. Jason casually stretched and both fire adepts summoned their weapons. “I’m sure you can handle the newbie over here, Ash” She nodded and charged at Chris, bringing both blades down in a blazing arc. The earth adept neatly sidestepped her attack, caught her left wrist, and hurled her over his head. She let an audible noise of shocked as she sailed through the air and slammed face first into a large spruce tree. Chris turned and raced towards Jason unawares that a now very irate Ashley, nose broken and blood streaming down her face had gotten back up and was now coming at him with Dragon blades brandished and murder in her eyes. Jason leapt into the air as Chris swiped at his ankles. He retaliated with a downward blow that Chris would have blocked had Ashley not jumped onto his chest and slashed through both of his shoulders. The blades of fire easily cut through metal, bone and flesh instantly cauterizing the wounds as the useless limbs dropped to the ground. Nathaniel decided he had seen enough as Ashley raised her weapons to deal the killing blow. He launched himself into the air landing between Ashley and Chris. He raised his sword and let the flaming weapons slide down the length of his blade as he pushed them aside with a flick of his wrist. Below him , Chris tucked his body into a roll, gripped the hilt of his sword with his teeth and stabbed at Ashley’s midsection. She flipped backwards to avoid the blow and Jason took her place. Kicking Chris aside, he lunged toward Nathaniel his eyes now wild as he put everything he had behind a blazing punch. Nathaniel tilted his head to the side allowing the fist to fly past him. He then trust his leg upwards slamming it into the other boy’s chin. As Jason was sent reeling from the blow, Chris jumped over his partner with his right leg pulled back and glowing orange. “ MAMMOTH BLOW” The kick connected with his gut and chunks of spittle and blood flew from his from his mouth as he was sent sliding a mile across the floor. Before he hit the ground, Ashley threw herself at the pair, swords flaming and screaming obscenities. “Watch the language” Nathaniel said, signaling to Chris, and jumped. The other boy stomped the ground as hard as he could and his stones chirped “ MEGA QUAKE” The shock wave spread out, tearing the ground and tossing Ashley into the air. A blue magic circle appeared beneath Nathaniel and pointed his left hand at her. “AQUA WHIP” A large stream of water shot from his hand and curled around her legs. Nathaniel yanked hard on the whip causing Ashley to crash into the ground. When the dust cleared, both fire adepts staggered to their feet and Nathaniel stood beside Chris. Jason was about to cast the biggest spell in his arsenal when Ashley placed two fingers behind her back. Jason instantly recognized the signal and knew the fight was about to take a whole different turn. I guess all things must come to end She drew her sword across her arm, her blood running down her arm to create a small puddle on the ground. A red magic circle appeared under her and Jason backed away into the safety of the trees. “ Ancient power that sleeps inside me, awaken now and lend me your strength” A crimson aura enveloped her and the landscape around them began to burn as she continued to chant. “ Lend the power of the Great Flame until my enemy is rendered silent, now as I pray.” at this her eyes slowly opened to reveal blood red slits like a cat’s eye. “ Dragon’s Crest, activate!”
