I am having trouble with active and passive verbs. Is the verbs in this sentence correct?
During that one mile-walk to the paved highway, my heart was telling me to turn back and be reunited with my family that loved and prayed for me so fervently.

I don't think you have a problem with active/passives in this sentence. You just have one hell of an extremely complicated clause that's asking a lot of the reader.
Most of it has to do with the 'that-clause' and your emission of your 'to' in the infinitive 'to be'. I'd maybe even remove the conjunction (and) to give it a better flow:
During that one mile walk to the paved highway, my heart was telling me to turn back, to be reunited with a family who loved and prayed so fervently for me.
Although I wouls also remove 'fervently' as it resonates a very formal tone.

Sound of Silence is right, your problem is not one of passive or active. Its one of compound sentences!:)
