Two rules.
1, Write what you know.
2, Write from your heart.

I especially like rule number two above.
Have you looked into to writing for local or city papers? I usually find in every city myriad "city papers" and some include bold short works of fiction and/or stories that read similar to fiction. There's a paper in DC called The City Paper and it's a tremendous source: a cornucopia of journalism and literature. There's always reviews too, from music to movies and of course food (since everyone eats).
To be honest, I could use some tips too. :)

one of the best things to do is simply to write. don't get too caught up in the deep specifics in the plot until you have all your ideas mapped out, and write what feels right.

well a good place to start is to get a general idea of:
1. characters
-protagonist/antagonist, etc
2. setting
-time period
-location
3. plot
4. genre in which you plan to write
if you are having trouble generating ideas, try to find inspiration in something you have experienced. also, you can decide the theme of the story and what you want the writing to mean or say to the reader.
