Slash or Or?

Hi there,

I have been writing about children but sometimes I am confused what is more proper to use. If I will be referring to any gender, should I use " his/her" or his OR her? Or is it both correct depending on the situation?

For some cases, I use him or his because I suppose masculine pronouns generalize all.

I read the post and It lead one on the other. I supposed this is also a question of gender prioritization.
