1) They all were hungry.
2) They were all hungry.
I'm not sure if both are correct, I think they might be. Is the slight difference from (1) present (2)past?
Don't see any difference since either can be understood.

They're both fine, but the question which one is better than the other depends on the context, i.e. the surrounding story line.
For me, "They were all hungry" sounds better. That's my two cents.

i agree with ana. "They were all hungry" flows better. though it could vary, depending on what you want to emphasize. if you wanted to place the emphasis on the fact that everyone was hungry you might say "They all were hungry"
note: the title should be "Which of these sentences is correct"

Both examples are in the past tense.

Johnston says he lived with the Palin family from early December to the second week in January. He claims he heard the governor several times say how nice it would be to take advantage of the lucrative deals that were being offered, including a reality show and a book."I think the big deal was the book. That was millions of dollars," said Johnston, who has had a strained relationship with the family but now says things have improved.

True, but if this were me I'd go for the one with less words. Less is more, and all that.
