Like many people, I expect, I've just found this site thanks to the plug on the Beeb.
I'm not a professional writer and I'm not sure if I ever want to be.
I write simply to clear out ideas that might otherwise fester and clog up my brain. An idea, often just of a conversation, will get me started and I'll continue with a piece as long as I feel it's getting somewhere then shelve it. If nothing new is coming I'll read old stuff to see if adding more to that is a possibility. I enjoy conversational writing as the initial basis for a story because it can sometimes go off in unexpected directions so I'm reading it as a story new to me while I'm still writing.
What am I looking for here?
The technical tips could be useful the improve things for the benefit of the two people who do get to read my stuff. I've already learned to put the number in words rather than figures for that last statement :)
It's also good to read other peoples' experiences. Knowing that a problem is common rather than your own stupidity is very encouraging. "The Writer's Tale" by Russell T Davies is probably the most inspiring thing I've read recently. Knowing that a decorated writer has the same sort of problems and insecurities as the rest of us puts the whole thing in perspective.
I registered because I hate to observe without the option to participate. I write a long intro because I can never resist the temptation to bore strangers :D
