"Maybe" and "May be"

I'm always confused about when to use "maybe" and when to use "may be". Could someone please enlighten me?

Maybe, one word, is an adverb meaning "perhaps."
Maybe I'll go, and maybe I won't.

May be, two words, is a verb phrase and means about the same thing.

It may be that he meant well, but all he accomplished was to hurt her feelings.

You may be the only person who ever believed that Paris Hilton was an intellectual giant.
