The sailing ships from scotland went to Meditarrean shores heavily loaded with whatever! On the return vovage the cheapest ballast was Oranges which were dumped at the docks .Poor ladies made jam as the fruit was free.A scottish nobleman was offered a taste while visiting his estates.He loved it so much that he exclaimed,Maar me Ladie and the name stuck as MARMALADE.Got it???

A sweet story indeed. Of course, Mary had a French mother and was educated in France, so she probably wouldn’t have misunderstood the language even if feverish.
